Documentation on the latest version of Intel Hex format, covering the full 32 bit version which can address the entire 4 GB space of the 32 bit processors, is not too easy to find. Various sites have one or another version. I have managed to find this document in three different formats, plain ASCII text, Microsoft Word for Windows, and Adobe PDF. Free Adobe Acrobat Readers are available for most computer platforms.
Microsoft now makes MASM (Microsoft Macro Assembler) a part of the Windows 98 and Windows NT Driver Development Kits which can be downloaded free from their web site.
Originally it was only available in the Windows NT DDK which had to be downloaded in one huge package.
It is now available in the Windows 98 DDK which can be downloaded in pieces. Assuming that you only want MASM and a linker here is the minimum you need to download and do.
- Go to http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/ddk98.htm. Read the license agreement and click the "Accept" button.
- When you get to the Windows 98 DDK Download page, scroll down to the individual components section.
- Download the BINS_DDK.EXE file, about 3 Mb.
- Run the self-extracting exe file. It will make four new files.
- Open BINS_DDK.CAB with WinZip. (Don't have WinZip? Shame on you. Get it at

- You will want to extract the following files:
